On an overnight EV tariff of around 7p per kWh, a typical car doing 8,000 miles a year costs roughly £140 a year to charge. On a standard tariff of about 25p it is closer to £500. The same mileage on public rapid chargers at 79p is about £1,600.
Home is dramatically cheaper. Public rapid charging in the UK runs around 79p per kWh, against roughly 7p on an overnight EV tariff at home. That is about eleven times the price for the same electricity.
A three-pin granny lead draws around 2.3kW and takes most of the night for a partial charge. It is also not designed for daily high-load use. A 7kW wall charger charges roughly three times faster, is safer for continuous load, and is the only way to use most cheap overnight tariffs properly.
